Bruce Spence & Beth Parnaby, 1971
The Removalists
The stories behind it:
Created by printmaker Beth Parnaby (born 1946) and director/actor Bruce Spence (born 1945), The Removalists print embodies the collision of performance and visual art. Spence, whose five-decade career spans stage, film, and television (including Mad Max 2 and The Matrix Revolutions) brought his theatrical energy to the project. He made his film debut in Stork in 1971, based on, “The Coming of Stork” by David Williamson, which premiered at La Mama in 1970. Parnaby, an acclaimed printmaker with works now in the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria, drew on her creativity and technical skill as a print maker. Their collaboration captured the dynamic interplay between inner-vision, text and lived experience.
