A multigenerational story about love, legacy, and the tides of change.
More detailsWhat do we inherit from the people who raised us — and what do we pass on?
There are stories that live in families long after the people who made them are gone.
ENDLING is a strange, funny and unsettling encounter with one woman, her late grandfather, and the ghosts of what has been handed down.
Drawing on Rebecca Bower’s own experience, the work moves through grief, coercive control, masculinity, memory and love — but it is also a search for something beyond inheritance. Through heightened language, movement, ritual, humour and live sound, the past is summoned, rearranged and given a voice.
A live chorus of male voices becomes part of this shifting landscape. They are family, witnesses, ancestors, community; sometimes recognisable, sometimes uncanny, sometimes tender. Their voices create a world in which the boundaries between one generation and the next begin to blur.
ENDLING asks whether we can listen to the stories we have inherited closely enough to change their ending.

Grounded at Red Stitch
“Von Bibra’s direction develops a style of conjunct physical theatre that keeps the eye beguiled and never looks forced.”
Afterplay at La Mama
“Kirsten von Bibra has excelled in bringing to life this language-based play from a playwright compared favourably to Beckett, Pinter and Miller and referred to as an "Irish Chekhov".”
“It’s a delight to watch luminous performances from two veteran actors, whose instincts for and knowledge of Chekhov’s work are given full play under Kirsten von Bibra’s assured directorial eye. ”
Rebecca Bower- (Writer/Performer)
