Explorations 2026

Exhibition: First and Second

A 19th Century countess has herself photographed over 700 times in a Paris studio.
A 20th Century actress creates a singular groundbreaking piece of independent cinema before fading into relative obscurity.
When a woman makes art, what does she see?
From creative duo Caroline Lee and Laurence Strangio, EXHIBITION: First and Second is a multi-faceted solo performance that expands on their 2024 piece EXHIBITION: The White Dress.
This work investigates the remarkable stories of two women artists who use performative art forms in an attempt to avoid erasure and to better understand the world and themselves.

Performer and Co-writer: Caroline Lee

Director and Dramaturg: Laurence Strangio

IN EACH INSTANCE THIS PARTNERSHIP HAS CREATED INDELIBLE PRODUCTIONS AND SEARING PERFORMANCES OF RARE INTENSITY, SUBTLETY, AND EXTRAORDINARY INTIMACY. LEE AND STRANGIO TAKE GREAT RISKS IN THEIR EXPLORATIONS, AND DRAW BOLD THINGS FROM EACH OTHER.

LEE'S PERFORMANCE IS COMPELLING AND CONVINCING, YET COMPLETELY UNHISTRIONIC...LA DOULEUR IS ANOTHER OUTSTANDING COLLABORATIVE DRAMATISATION FROM STRANGIO AND LEE.
