Explorations 2026

Public Universal Foe

The Public Universal Friend, born 1752, reborn 1776. A radical non-binary preacher, or a canny woman in colonial New England? True believer or opportunistic cult leader? The Second Coming or Devil incarnate? A new ensemble work, Public Universal Foe plays with time, opinion, and form to explore the history and impact of this fascinating and forgotten figure; how identity, gender, and belief are formed by intention and circumstance - whether we like it all not. Influenced by Anthony Burgess' "Mozart and the Wolf Gang", let's remix what's come before and examine how we tell of our queer history, here and now.

Written and Directed by Emma Chandler

Performed and Co-Devised by Sarah Hartnell, Lilian Hudson, Cian Morgan, and Tristan Sicari

Dramaturgy by Dr Rob Reid

[Emma Chandler's] Numa and Karl is an incredibly welcome history lesson that deserves global recognition for its dedication to queer joy and resistance.
The Dialogue
Numa and Karl is not merely a biopic. It is an artwork in itself, using history not only to educate the audience about a man who began the first LGBTQIA+ rights movement, but to remind that sexuality has been a topic of discussion for longer than history acknowledges.
