GAG REFLEX Stage Manager, Steph Lee on colour coding and well executed cues.
1. How do you begin?
I open up excel, choose a colour that matches the show's vibe and then buy a folder for my script in the colour scheme (very important). For Gag Reflex it will be a nice pastel pink - if you come to the show you’ll know why!
2. What’s your favourite way to work?
Colour coded spreadsheets, neat spike marks and nicely organised, properly labelled props table/s.
3. What can an audience member expect of your work in Gag Reflex?
They can expect crisp, well executed Lx, Sx and Av cues every show. They also can expect to never notice I was even there (until the actors expose my hiding spot during bows).
Steph is an emerging queer feminist director, theatre-maker and stage manager who graduated with a Masters of Theatre Directing from the VCA in 2023. In 2022 Steph received a Green Room Award Nomination for co-writing 'A Zoom Group Project: The Musical' (The Butterfly Club), which she also directed. Most recently, they co-wrote and directed ‘Checked Out: The Musical’ for Melbourne Fringe 2025 which was a Judge’s Pick (Solidarity Hall). Last year they also directed and co-devised ‘SLAY’ (Explosives Factory) which was received critical praise as ’the best original theatre I’ve seen in Melbourne for a long time’ (Theatre Travels). For Midsumma 2024 they revived Declan Greene’s early work ‘HOME ECONOMICS’ after a sold out run for her 2023 VCA grad show (Explosives Factory). In the last few years they have interned on ‘Looking For Alibrandi’ at Malthouse (dir. Stephen Nicolazzo), ‘Wolf Play’ at Red Stitch (dir. Isabella Vadiveloo), and ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ at Princess Theatre (resident dir. David Spencer). Their recent stage management highlights include: ASM on ‘A Nighttime Travesty’ (Malthouse 2025), PM/SM for both Western Edge’s Edge Ensembles Program 2024/2025 and VUSC school program 2025, ASM on ‘STORKED’ for Antipodes Theatre Company (Theatre Works 2025) and SM for ‘Threadbare’ by Tomas Parrish-Chynoweth (St Martins 2025).
