Proud Wathaurong/Ngarrindjeri man and La Mama's First Nations Producer, Glenn Shea, wins the Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting at the 2025 NSW Literary Awards for his stunning work, Three Magpies Perched in a Tree!
The piece is the first part of his An Indigenous Trilogy, a project that has been in cultural development for over two decades, and that culminates years of research, sensitive community outreach, presentation to Elders and young people, careful planning, consideration for First Nations stories, song and dance and artistic development.
It's a play that we were honoured to present, and that has earned high praise:
“Unvarnished anecdotes lay bare the scale of disadvantage and distress, with gritty snapshots of marginalised Indigenous families and their run-ins with authorities narrated with agonised clarity.”
“...an eye-opening portrait of the criminal justice system and the extent to which the police are involved in a young Indigenous person’s life from birth and through schooling.”
Congratulations to all winners of the 2025 NSW Literary Awards, and to all who were shortlisted for the Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting.
We're absolutely thrilled for Glenn, and we can't wait to see what comes next both for him and for this project.
The play is available for purchase at Currency Press.
